Building a Week-by-Week Programme in the Advanced Editor

Plan a periodised programme in weeks and days, add supersets and conditioning blocks, progress it automatically and publish it to your client.

Written by Cloudia Barr

The Advanced editor is a second programme builder inside the Creator. Instead of a single list of exercises, you plan in a grid of weeks and days, so it suits longer strength and return-to-sport blocks. The simple Creator is still the default and is all you need for most programmes.

Opening the Advanced editor

  1. Go to Creator.

  2. Click the Advanced editor button in the top bar (its tooltip reads "Open the Advanced editor (weeks, days, supersets)").

  3. Click the programme title to rename it.

Any exercises already in your programme come across into Week 1, Day 1. To go back at any time, open the ... menu in the toolbar and choose Switch to simple builder.

Choosing how the plan is scheduled

Use the toggle in the top bar:

  • Free-form - the client progresses day by day at their own pace. Days are labelled Day 1 to Day 7.

  • Date-based - days are pinned to calendar dates from a start date you pick, and the day headers change to real dates.

Three views of the same plan

  • Week grid - every week and day on one screen. Click a day to select it, double-click to open it, and right-click (or long-press on a tablet) for actions.

  • Day - one session in full, with a set table for each exercise showing reps, load, rest, tempo and RPE.

  • Progression - one day laid out across every week, so you can see and edit how the load builds. Choose the day with the tabs above the grid, or select Show all days.

Adding exercises to a day

  1. Click + Add exercise on a day, or select the day and press N.

  2. Search the exercise library and add the exercise you want.

  3. To load a saved template instead, open Templates in the top bar, then choose Load to bring in the whole template or Add to add it to the day you are working on.

Setting sets, reps and load

In Day view, type straight into any cell. Use + Add set to add a set, and the icons at the end of a set row to mark it as a warm-up set, duplicate it or delete it.

For a faster way, right-click an exercise and choose Edit params (or select it and press Enter). In the quick params box you can set Sets, Reps / time, Load, Rest, Tempo and RPE in one go.

Comma-separated values are spread across the sets, for example 10,8,6. Use + Add param for extras such as a timed hold or times per day, tick Each side (L/R) where it applies, and add a note for the patient.

Before you apply, choose whether the change affects This exercise, This + later occurrences, or All occurrences in the plan.

Loads can be entered as a fixed weight or as a percentage of the client's 1RM.

Sections, supersets and conditioning blocks

At the foot of each day you will find a row of buttons:

  • + Section - split the session into parts such as warm-up, main and cool-down.

  • + Superset - exercises performed back to back.

  • + Circuit, + AMRAP, + EMOM and + RFT (rounds for time) - for conditioning work.

  • + Note - add an instruction for the client.

Working with days and weeks

  • Open the ... menu on a day to open, copy, duplicate or paste it, mark it as a rest day, clear it, delete it, or give it a colour.

  • Open the ... menu on a week to duplicate it, progress from it, insert an empty week after it, mark it as a deload or delete it. A week holds up to seven days.

  • Under the grid, + Add week duplicates the last week and + Empty week adds a blank one.

Progressing a plan automatically

Rather than typing every week by hand, build one good week and progress it.

  1. Click + Progressed week... under the grid.

  2. Choose the week to progress from, how many weeks to add and the percentage per week.

  3. Under Progress, leave it on Auto or choose what should change, and set the kg increment.

  4. Set the rep range and what happens past the ceiling, for example reset and add a set, along with the maximum number of sets.

  5. Tick Progress warm-up sets too or Even reps only if you need them.

  6. Review the proposal table. Every generated week is shown before anything is saved, and you can edit any cell.

  7. Click Add week to apply.

Keyboard shortcuts

Press ? at any time to see the full list. The most useful are:

  • N - add an exercise to the selected day

  • Shift + W - add a week (duplicates the last week)

  • Cmd/Ctrl + C, X, V - copy, cut and paste across days, weeks and views

  • Cmd/Ctrl + D - duplicate the selected set, exercise, block, day or week

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Enter - apply a cell's value to all sets below it

  • Alt + Up / Down - move the selected exercise or block

  • Cmd/Ctrl + Z - undo, up to 50 steps

  • / - jump to the exercise search

Previewing and publishing

  1. Click Preview to see the programme as your patient will see it.

  2. Click Publish and work through the Publish drawer as you would in the simple Creator. An advanced programme carries its own week-by-week schedule, so there is nothing to set in the When step.

  3. To keep the plan for reuse, open the arrow next to Publish and save it as a template.

If you change a plan a client is already working through, save it as a new version. They keep the same programme and their history stays intact.
